A West Village townhouse once home to Courtney Love is on the market for a hefty $22.9 million.
The 22-foot-wide, five-story Italianate-style townhouse at 27 Bank St. was built in 1856 and once housed an unusual cast of characters.
There was a tenant for life in a garden-level apartment with a separate entrance below the stoop, a source said, as well as a rent-stabilized tenant on the top floor, causing some unnecessarily tense moments with Love, known as the frontwoman of Hole and the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
Years ago, when Gimme Shelter toured the townhouse, entrepreneur Michael Bruno, founder of 1stDibs.com, was then renting most of the property, which he shared with the upstairs neighbor, a retired book editor, without incident. However, at the time, the editor, who did not want to be named, told Gimme it was a different story when she shared the townhouse with Love.
Once, she said, Love’s assistant asked her to never to speak to Love or look her in the eye if they passed each other on the stairs. “It was awkward because [the editor] had to walk through [the other tenants’] rental home to get to her upstairs apartment,” a source said.
Love, through her publicist, did not return calls.
All units in the townhouse are now market rate. Last April, an “upper-parlor triplex” in the home was on the market as a $50,000-a-month rental. The price then dropped to $30,000 a month and is currently listed as rented, according to StreetEasy.
However, the home — when it sells — will be delivered vacant, according to the listing.
The sellers, Anthony Oldfield and Jennifer Lister Oldfield, bought the home for $7 million in 2008, and did not return calls at press time.
The townhouse features five bedrooms, five baths, seven working fireplaces, a private garden, and original details like “an intact stoop” and oversize windows. The parlor floor comes with a large living room with 12-foot-high ceilings, as well as a formal dining room and a renovated kitchen with a sunroom. Original details on this floor include the staircase, as well as ceiling moldings, wide-plank oak floors and a marble fireplace mantel.
The second and third floors have two additional bedrooms, each with marble fireplaces, while the top floor is currently a studio with high ceilings, a window wall, a skylight and access to a roof deck.
